National Geographic - Photography

I thought this morning to watch a documentary on National geographic and after surfing through various sections, I came across "Photography".

This is a documentary created on the life of photographers whose photos make it to the cover page of national geographic magazine.

What is Photography?
To capture the moment or an expression. These moments are unexpected moments or are memorable experiences.
In capturing the moment, the subject is the center piece of the image. The subject is always in the control of the photo.

What is the new ways of capturing images or new age photography?
Capturing static nature of the image with moving edges. One has to defy the conventional nature of photography to bring in the true and real experience.
Another way is, evoke the feeling of the moment. For still photography this plays a vital role.


What are the attributes of a good photograph?
Good Photograph- Clear, Sharp, Strong center of interest, composition is good, nice content, good design, says something about life, planet.

Deep ,thorough, intimate powerful photos.

See the light exposure, movement and images and capture the appropriate moment.

To capture the image in the natural surroundings.

One must have enough time on hands and patience is the key.

A special talent of bond of trust with the subject by putting the subject at ease. The subject could be wildlife or under water flora, fauna or people. To make them feel comfortable before capturing the photo is bringing in the true essence of reality.

Freezing the moment is the true essence of photography.

Every picture tells a story. A photographer always has an idea in her head about the context of her capturing the image.



What are you trying to capture?
A photographer is looking at the present to capture the images or personality of the past. How the people or place were 400 years ago?

Challenges in photography
Capturing images of the hidden world and bringing them to the world of reality. In essence exposing the realities to the world.
To get to the reality, a photographer must encroach in the privacy of the subject. Photographers can become intruders in that situation.
Photographers try to break the culture barriers which are mean to be broken in capturing the true essence of life.
