American phrases-I

A sledgehammer to crack the nut.

Bats in the belfry- crazy eccentric

As happy as a clam.

Blaze a trail- lead the trail from the front

Back seat driver- criticize from the sidelines.

Bury the hatchet- to Come to a settlement with  your adversaries.

Compote- Fruits stewed or stored in syrup and offered as dessert.

Smattering- a slight , superficial knowledge of something.

Bog- usually a stretch of ground covered with water or covered with compose or decayed waste.

Cumulus- a heap or a pile usually appears as a mound that has a flat base and is vertically piled like a cauliflower.

Bristling- to be rigid with anger.
